How to keep your dog happy
How to keep your dog happy? Dogs have been man’s best friend since the dawn of time. From farm dogs to family pets, dogs have been helping us and keeping us company for centuries. Keeping our four legged friend happy and paying him back for all his support is becoming more and more of a priority for many dog owners. So how can we keep our dogs happy?
Feed him all the right stuff!
Dogs have very specific needs and shouldn’t be given any old human scraps that may not be good for his digestion. Make sure the food you are giving him meets all of his nutritional needs and always read the packet. Some manufacturers get away with putting all sorts of harmful substances in their dog foods.
Feed his mind!
Dogs need something to keep their mind on. All breeds are bred for a specific purpose, and it’s up to you to find a job that suits your furry friend! An insufficiently stimulated dog is liable to get up to mischief, particularly when left alone. Although it’s not always possible to find him sheep to herd or animals to retrieve, there are other ways you can keep him occupied. Always leave him plenty of toys when you leave him on his own. Consider setting up an agility course for him, or find a stimulating walking spot.
Keep him socialized
Dogs are pack animals, and aren’t meant to be alone. Keeping dogs isolated is detrimental to their wellbeing, and can cause issues when they come face to face with other dogs unexpectedly. Take your dog to public places if his personality allows it. If you have an anxious pup, organize play dates with dogs you know and introduce him gently.
Be a leader!
Dogs need to know that you are in charge so they can trust you to take care of them. Dogs who believe they are in control are often stressed and unable to cope with the responsibility. Whereas love and affection are priority, don’t forget to give him routine and consistency.
Keep him fit!
Dogs need exercise as much as people, here are a few activities you can do together:
- Hide and seek
- Long walks or runs
- Agility classes
Keep him healthy!
Regular visits to the vet can help maintain a dog’s good health, and can help you determine methods for any hygiene concerns.
